MY MYCOLOGY ROADTRIP

Trumping through the forests of Northern California is not how most people spend their time in high school biology. However, because of wonderfully lenient teachers, a small group of students and I, were able to take a week off of school to road trip up the coast in search of fungi.

The first day was spent driving from our home in sunny Southern California to the first campsite near Santa Cruz called the Henry Cowell State Park. Next day we drove to a forest near by and went mushroom hunting (finding a few banana slugs along the way).

Wednesday was another driving day; we made our way from Santa Cruz into San Francisco and then finally to Samuel P. Taylor State Park. Thursday was another hunting day so we got up early and went out on a hike to the nearby mountain peak.

During our last day we ended up spending a total of 18 hours in the car. We woke up at 5am, packed up our tents in the middle of a rain storm and proceeded to drive home without a side view mirror (broke it the night before). On the way home we drove through Big Sur, making sure to stop at McWay Falls.
