For me, the real beginning of the school year is marked by the first Astronomy Club camping trip. This year, that trip took us down a crazy dirt road, winding around rocks and cactus, through the desert, deep into Anza Borrego State Park. We arrived at a primitive site called Jaspers around 6 and decided to climb up a small rocky mountain to watch the sunset.

If you have never been out in the middle of nowhere, away from all the city lights, make sure you do at least once. It will change the way you look at the sky; the sheer amount of stars is mind-blowing! Once the sun was gone, we began constructing a fire pit, putting up tripods and setting up the astronomy telescope. The night brought with it a vast sea of stars including some of my favorite constellations: Cassiopeia, Orion, Pledies as well as the Milky Way and Andromeda. The second photo below is a picture of the Milky Way taken with a Cannon 6D.

We spent most of the night taking photos, but when it was time for bed we just found a nice hill and laid out our sleeping pads and bags. It was pretty cold, but every time a windy gush came by I woke up to an amazing, star filled sky. In the morning we were greeted by the warming sunrise as well as a little scorpion that had been sleeping next to me all night.
