Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns. -George Eliot
Just like George, my favorite season is fall; the air is crisp, the trees (or lack there of in San Diego) change color and everything just smells like rain and cinnamon. With all these warm feelings how can you not want to just go out and explore, engaging in some fun fall festivities. Since it is too early to go and trump about in the pumpkin patch, this weekend we decided to head up to Julian in search of their famous you-pick apple orchards. This weekend also happened to be Apple Days, so along with the orchards being at their best, many small carnivals popped up and the smell of pie was in full force.

The orchards have many different varieties of apples and the only equipment you need is one of the you-pick bags available for sale at the entrance. Yes, the prices of the bags seem steep and are inflated due to the huge amount of tourist that flood these fields. At $12 a bag, you are likely to only buy one or two, but you actually get a good amount for your money. These little bags appeared small, but by the end of it, they became very heavy and contained dozens of little apples.

After a fruitful day of picking, there's nothing better to do than enjoy a little picnic. If you can't find a peaceful, shady corner in town I suggest traveling a few miles south on the 79 to the scenic view spot. Not only is this a quiet place to park and enjoy but the views are incredible! You will be able to see the entire valley and surrounding mountains as you sit back (possibly in the bed of your truck like us) and enjoy some fresh apples and cold quesadillas.

Don't know what to with all those apples? Just follow my common saying - if in doubt, make pie!
